A few of us travelled to the Fairhope Yacht Club Wadewitz regatta this past weekend. Gary Roger, Matt McDonald and Joe Gibbs all attended for JYC. This is a huge regatta, I don’t know how many classes there were but if you had a boat I believe they had a class for it. The new FYC clubhouse is super nice, they’ve done a great job of reconstruction.
JYC didn’t fair very well in the event. It appears that we just all need to spend more time on the boat racing the really good sailors. On the good side though we finally have our 8 required events for the GYA Capdevielle series. Which brings me up to another topic. We need more Flying Scot sailors! There is a small handfull of us in the club that seem to be carrying the load on the Capdevielle events. And while we enjoy racing Capdevielle, the few of us just can’t make all the events we want to. There are 16 events all around the GYA and each club needs 8 races to qualify. This is especially important to JYC if we want to continue to keep the Gilliland Regatta which is one of the 16 Capdevielle events. Last year due to conflicts (i.e. hurricanes and regatta schedules) we were only able to make 7 events. So we have at least redeemed ourselves in the participation column, now we just need to get more people coming to our Gilliland Regatta as well as build up our FS sailor base.
In Capdevielle there is a minimum crew weight of 390 lbs (except for the Liptons, 425lfbs). This is an interesting weight threshold. If you have a couple of guys that weigh in between 160-190lbs, you can’t make the minimum unless you add another person. Best all around weight of the Scot? 440-450lbs. So adding another normal guy puts you way over that, which is slow upwind and slower downwind. Unless there is big breeze, 20+kts, then you are fast upwind but can’t fly the chute downhill without risk of breaking a mast.

Saturday Oct 3rd and Oct 17 JYC will have a Flying Scot orientation clinic to teach club members how to properly rig, sail and store the club Flying Scots. The clinic will begin at 10:00 am. JYC has 3 Flying Scots available for sailing but you have to be checked out by one of our club members who is very familiar with the boats. We do this for a few reasons:
- Safety- If are familiar with the boat you are sailing you are less likely to get into serious trouble when the weather change quickly or you capsize. So for your safety we want you to know as much about the boat as possible.
- Boat longevity- When many people use something it will wear out faster. We know this will happen, however we want everyone to know how to care for the boats and the sails. No one wants to sail a beat up boat with trashed gear and sails so we will spend time on proper boat and sail care.
- Enjoyment- We will spend time teaching you to sail the boat to have more fun. There are easy ways to sail and difficult, we want to make it easy. Members who enjoy sailing will enjoy the club more as well.
So come on out Saturday and learn about the Scots, we’ll have two of them ready for new sailors.

It that time of year again, Labor Day weekend and…Liptons! We’ve had boards out of both Redwing and JB trying to get all the dings and “dangs” out. Looks like we are finally getting our Mainsail back from LCYC. (That was a mess.)
So the teams are lining up like this.
Saturday Race 1, 1425hrs, Gibbs, Buchanan, Rogers
Sunday R2, 1025, Leggette, Cannon
Sunday R3, 1425, D. Muller, TBA, TBA
Monday R4, 1025, R. Muller, O’Daniel
Mart Lamar has graciously offered to bring Rebel over from Gulfport so the standby crews can watch the races and have a place to sleep for the weekend. Rebel is a beautiful 40′ wooden Lugger that is perfect for hanging out all day around the race course.

Our Junior Lipton team will make the trek this weekend (July 25-26) to Pensacola YC for the annual event. This event hosts the best of the best junior sailors in our GYA clubs sailing in the Flying Scot. Will Van Landeghem, Matt McDonald and Walker Burrows are making up the team. They’ve been practicing diligently all summer. They’ll be racing JB which is at Diversified Marine right now getting a centerboard gasket replaced. This should help smooth out the “flow” underneath and give these young men a little extra mojo.
Sail fast guys!

Team JYC attends Summer Regatta, finishing 7, 12 and WD after finishing. Caleb tells a great story of less than corinthian style sailing on the part of BYC’s team. Apparently there was an altercation regarding entering the zone in race 3. Caleb says they clearly had room, outside BYC says no, Caleb bumps another boat rounding that he can’t avoid and also bumps the mark. Post race discussion with witnesses agree Caleb was in the right, BYC is protested and Caleb sees no point in it since they finished 14th anyway. Don’t you love a team that protests the last place boat! So JYC withdraws. I agree with Caleb. Sounds like the rule was “no room for fair sailing” at this mark.
JYC will not start on Sunday, due to making the minimum weight (losing one crew). Not a reflection on the events of Saturday. Thanks to Caleb for representing us in Mobile.

The GYA Capdevielle racing season is heating up and not just because of the summer weather. Over the next few weekends there will be a Capdevielle race about every weekend, beginning in FWYC, then Summer Regatta @ MYC, Jr. Liptons at Pensacola YC, over to the Weatherly @ Gulfport YC Aug 1. After that we have the Race Week event the weekend before the Liptons at BYC. This would be a great tune up for the Liptons on August 29-30. Then Liptons on Sept 5-7.
If you want to participate in the Liptons, we want you to have participated in one of these other GYA Capdeville events. We don’t care if you have skippered just crewing is enough.

I have to hand it to our Junior team, they are spending a lot of time getting ready for the Jr. Lipton’s event and they are looking quite well. The event will be held at PYC on July 25-26.
One Saturday, Gilly Chamberlin was out giving them some pointers on trim and boat handling. This is exactly what all of our FS sailors need…HELP! Afterward our young team has been honing their skills on Wednesday night races and Saturday practice sessions.
So kudos to Will Van Landeghem, Matt McDonald, Walker Burrows, and Nicholas Burrows for getting out there and sticking with it.

It’s getting that time again. The 2009 Gilliland Regatta will be held again at JYC. This is a GYA Capdevielle event and is the third stop on the circuit. One boat from each GYA club participates for the overall Capdevielle Trophy.
We are rounding up the team now for the Gilliland so if you are interested in sailing for JYC let Joe Gibbs know or post a comment on this message, I’ll keep checking it. We’ll have a couple of practice sessions before the event as well.

Judging from the interest we have the following interested in an afternoon practice.
So, we’ll have a Saturday afternoon practice for the Scot(s). Let’s get there about 12:30 – 1:00 and start rigging and dropping boats in the water. JB has to have the mast raised, no big deal. For those that want to see how we do this try to be there by 12:30. If you don’t need to see the rigging then show around 1:00.
Right now I have the following saying they can (or possibly) show.
Jim O’Daniel
Robert Muller
Gary Rogers
Jim Leggette, possible
Joe Gibbs
Edgar Buchanan, possible
Four is all we need to sail two boats, and we can put three on each. Winds are forecast to be SW at 12-13.
Warning: If you sail with me you might get dumped.
See you Saturday!
