Great Weekend of Racing!
The Gilliland Regatta went off without a hitch! Great wind, warm weather and strong competitors from around the GYA.

Edgar shot a lot of video and we can expect to get a look at some starts and flips much to my embarrassment. I will post a link when available.

Next Regatta is Opening Regatta at Pensacola YC the first weekend in May. This should be a blast.

Road trip to the Meigs!

The JYC team competed this past weekend in the Meigs Capdevielle event at Fort Walton YC. It was a long trip but we planned for it accordingly and had no issues coming or going. The normal crew from Fresh Aire, including Matt McDonald, Bishop Blackwell and Joe Gibbs went down Friday afternoon set up the boat to be ready to go on Saturday morning.
Saturday racing was a blast! Three races barely a shift all day, so it was nothing but speed and direction all day. We needed an easy weekend like this. New venues and thinking about shifts and weather patterns confuse us.
Winds while steady ranged from 10-14 mph which was good for us as we were crewed a little on the heavy side, 570lbs! We had finishes of 11-9-8-12-7 out of thirteen hulls. We finished 9th overall. This isn’t bad for us. We felt like our straight line boat speed was ok, not stellar. Our pointing was not as good as some others however when we really hiked hard we could hold a lane and climb up to weather boats. This was very encouraging as we knew if we had to hold a lane we could. All we had to do was work our abs and legs. Obviously our teenager, Matt, could do this better than Bish or me so he stayed out further and longer.
Next areas we need to work on improving, starts & tacking more effectively.

dn’t be helped. Seniors are graduating and weekends are full of festival and celebration.
I am shooting to make the Spring Regatta in Mobile the 15th. I need crew help though. Anybody want to hook up for a sail?

Gilliland Regatta April 10-11, 2010

Gilliland Regatta is our local GYA Capedevielle event that JYC is proud to host each year. Last year we had a down year in participation but we are looking forward to much better attendance this year. We have moved the start of the first race back to 1300 on Saturday to give all the brothers and sisters time to drive to Jackson, rig and sail.
There is also talk of an open fleet to race as well. We are looking forward to this as well. Saturday night will be the traditional crawfish boil for all. Hope to see you all here.

JB is back on the lift

We’ve got JB back on the lift and ready to sail. The board has been reworked. Bish has put a “bumper” on the lift to keep people from banging the board when docking. So we should be ready to practice for the “G”.
Speaking of the Gilliland. I spoke with Dave Bolyard today while he was at JYC. Dave is the current commodore of the GYA and he tells me he is really putting the squeeze on some of the GYA clubs to come to Jackson for the Gilliland. “You all always put on a great event, people should be here” he says. I agree. The Gilliland is a drive for most of the clubs in the GYA and we really appreciate those who show.

2010 Season gearing up

NOYC Mardi Gras Regatta is kicking off in two weeks. Muller and O’Daniel are planning to be there to jumpstart our season. We have both Flying Scots’ boards out for repairs over with Diversified Marine. Hopefully we won’t bang them up again to soon. However, I think it is inevitable when trailering the boats around.
In case you aren’t aware we now have Redwing and JB on lifts. So this Spring we can start dropping them in for sailing BC races and practices.

Wadewitz Regatta, FYC

A few of us travelled to the Fairhope Yacht Club Wadewitz regatta this past weekend. Gary Roger, Matt McDonald and Joe Gibbs all attended for JYC. This is a huge regatta, I don’t know how many classes there were but if you had a boat I believe they had a class for it. The new FYC clubhouse is super nice, they’ve done a great job of reconstruction.

JYC didn’t fair very well in the event. It appears that we just all need to spend more time on the boat racing the really good sailors. On the good side though we finally have our 8 required events for the GYA Capdevielle series. Which brings me up to another topic. We need more Flying Scot sailors! There is a small handfull of us in the club that seem to be carrying the load on the Capdevielle events. And while we enjoy racing Capdevielle, the few of us just can’t make all the events we want to. There are 16 events all around the GYA and each club needs 8 races to qualify. This is especially important to JYC if we want to continue to keep the Gilliland Regatta which is one of the 16 Capdevielle events. Last year due to conflicts (i.e. hurricanes and regatta schedules) we were only able to make 7 events. So we have at least redeemed ourselves in the participation column, now we just need to get more people coming to our Gilliland Regatta as well as build up our FS sailor base.

In Capdevielle there is a minimum crew weight of 390 lbs (except for the Liptons, 425lfbs). This is an interesting weight threshold. If you have a couple of guys that weigh in between 160-190lbs, you can’t make the minimum unless you add another person. Best all around weight of the Scot? 440-450lbs. So adding another normal guy puts you way over that, which is slow upwind and slower downwind. Unless there is big breeze, 20+kts, then you are fast upwind but can’t fly the chute downhill without risk of breaking a mast.

Flying Scot Certification Clinic Oct 3 & 17

Saturday Oct 3rd and Oct 17 JYC will have a Flying Scot orientation clinic to teach club members how to properly rig, sail and store the club Flying Scots. The clinic will begin at 10:00 am. JYC has 3 Flying Scots available for sailing but you have to be checked out by one of our club members who is very familiar with the boats. We do this for a few reasons:

Safety- If are familiar with the boat you are sailing you are less likely to get into serious trouble when the weather change quickly or you capsize. So for your safety we want you to know as much about the boat as possible.
Boat longevity- When many people use something it will wear out faster. We know this will happen, however we want everyone to know how to care for the boats and the sails. No one wants to sail a beat up boat with trashed gear and sails so we will spend time on proper boat and sail care.
Enjoyment- We will spend time teaching you to sail the boat to have more fun. There are easy ways to sail and difficult, we want to make it easy. Members who enjoy sailing will enjoy the club more as well.

So come on out Saturday and learn about the Scots, we’ll have two of them ready for new sailors.

Liptons @ BucYC

It that time of year again, Labor Day weekend and…Liptons! We’ve had boards out of both Redwing and JB trying to get all the dings and “dangs” out. Looks like we are finally getting our Mainsail back from LCYC. (That was a mess.)
So the teams are lining up like this.

Mart Lamar has graciously offered to bring Rebel over from Gulfport so the standby crews can watch the races and have a place to sleep for the weekend. Rebel is a beautiful 40′ wooden Lugger that is perfect for hanging out all day around the race course.
